Threat Assessment

A threat assessment, with proper security management, is an ongoing and fluid process.  There are typically four components that go into a proper threat assessment.  In order, they are Evaluation, Preparation, Testing, and Response.  The evaluation phase is commonly mistaken for the “Threat Assessment;” however it is to identify weaknesses and assess their need to be more closely secured.  Preparation is just that; in preparation, countermeasures are put into place in order to negate the vulnerabilities assessed during the evaluation phase.  In the testing segment of a good assessment, it is to test and retest the countermeasures put in place to cover the weaknesses that were addressed in the first two points.  Finally, the response mechanisms that were applied to intercept and/or disrupt the threat are deployed and then evaluated for their efficacy.  As that evaluation is done, the cycle begins again to prepare, test, and respond.
